Summary (for busy folks)
Terrapin Takeover is a fully hand-sketched, choice-driven action-adventure game set on the campus of the University of Maryland. The protagonist, awakened late for class, discovers a world transformed. It is now up to them to save the day.
Each element of Terrapin Takeover was first sketched in a notebook and then transferred to Figma. The game takes approximately 4:15 minutes to complete, features 6 mini-games, 2 endings, and 162 Figma screens. I began by writing a script, then used storyboards to visualize and track the elements I needed to sketch. Over two days on the UMD campus, I sketched everything from houses, clouds, and vegetation to famous landmarks like McKeldin Library and Hornbake Building. I then transferred these elements to Figma, created a design system for repeating UI elements, and spent five days assembling the game. It took me three days to finalize the design and two more to prototype and animate all screens. Terrapin Takeover may not be the most visually elaborate game, but it is one of my favorites, and I would love to expand it further.
